Understand Intellectual Property—patents, trademarks, and copyrights—and learn how to protect innovations, identify assets, and manage application processes effectively.

Course Module Overview

This course module offers a dynamic and insightful guide to how Intellectual Property (IP) is protected at Visayas State University (VSU). It walks you through the journey of innovation from the moment an idea is conceived to its transformation into a legally protected output. You’ll discover how the creative and research outputs of faculty, researchers, staff, and students are carefully identified, assessed, and secured using the right IP protection strategies.

At the heart of this process is the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO), your key partner in turning ideas into protected innovations. The module unpacks ITSO’s vital role in every step, guiding invention disclosure, conducting prior-art searches, and supporting patent drafting and filing through the IPOPHL Electronic Filing System.

More than just a procedural guide, this module underscores why protecting intellectual property matters. By safeguarding research outputs, VSU not only ensures proper recognition for its innovators but also amplifies the real-world impact of their work.

By the end of the course, learners will not only understand intellectual property. They will know how to start claiming it.
